Latest Indiana coronavirus updates

Indiana reporting 2,500 deaths
The Indiana State Department of Health announced 2,500 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, an increase of six from Saturday. Deaths occurred between June 17 and July 4.

The state also reported 596 more Hoosiers diagnosed with COVID-19. That brings to 48,008 the total number of Indianapolis News residents known to have the novel coronavirus following corrections to Saturday’s total.

Intensive care unit and ventilator capacity remain steady. As of Sunday, nearly 42 percent of ICU beds and 84 percent of ventilators are available.

To date, 521,722 tests have been reported to ISDH, up from 512,288 on Saturday. The rate of positive tests has dropped .10 to 9.2 percent overall.

There have been 2.84 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. as of 7 a.m. ET Saturday, according to Johns Hopkins University. Indianapolis Press Release News There have been more than 129,670 deaths and 894,325 people recovered.

Worldwide, there have been 11,288,000 confirmed cases with more than 531,200 deaths and more than 6 million recovered.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms.  For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

US holiday fuels worries about skyrocketing virus cases

The United States has dipped under 50,000 new daily infections for the first time in four days, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Experts fear, however, that celebrations for the July 4th weekend will act like rocket fuel for the nation’s surging coronavirus outbreak.

Johns Hopkins counted 45,300 new coronavirus infections Saturday in the U.S. after three days in which the daily count reached as high as 54,500 new cases. The lower figure could be due to reduced reporting on a national holiday.

Despite warnings by health experts to limit gatherings, President Donald Trump went ahead with a speech at Mount Rushmore on Friday and fireworks Saturday on the National Mall in Washington.

Pubs reopen in England

Early indications suggest that the reopening of pubs in England on Saturday did not overwhelm emergency Indianapolis Weather News services as many had feared in the run-up to the biggest easing of the lockdown.

For the most part, people appeared to abide by the rules, though in some places, the numbers out and about meant it was very difficult to do so.

John Apter, chair of the Police Federation, was on shift on Saturday night, and said it was “crystal clear” that drunk people struggled, or ignored, social distancing rules.

Though the easing has been warmly welcomed by many, there are concerns the British government is being overly hasty in sanctioning the changes.

The U.K. has experienced one of the world’s worst outbreaks so far, with the official coronavirus death toll of 44,198 is the third-highest behind the United States and Brazil.
